Arsenal got off to a great start last night in the Champions League with a 2-1 away win against Marseille through goals from Theo Walcott and the much improved Aaron Ramsey.
Arsenal endured an indifferent campaign in the Champions League last season though, In a group containing themselves, Montpellier, Schalke and Olympiacos they finished in a lacklustre way in second place to the Bundesliga side. Perhaps the loss at home to Schalke was the most disappointing aspect of the campaign. Arsenal eventually paid the price for this loss of concentration with their second placed finish meaning they were to face the favourites and eventual winners Bayern Munich.
Unfortunately, the tie was over by the time the final whistle blew in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium. A 3-1 away win by Bayern in which a couple of the goals were gifted to them left Arsenal a mountain to climb in Germany. Arsenal to their credit very nearly produced a shock two legged result in the Allianz Arena winning 2-0 but bowing out on away goals to the winners. This season they will look to go at least one better.
However, Arsene Wenger would have been cursing his luck when he saw who Arsenal were alongside this season in the group stage. Infinitely more tougher than last season, the North Londoners were drawn with Marseille, Rafael Benitez’s Napoli and runners up from last season Borussia Dortmund. It will be tough for Arsenal to qualify with the amount of top players in them teams. Here are five that Arsene Wenger should watch out for in particular.
