Didier Drogba

Earlier in the season, it was alleged that Arsenal wanted to bring in Chelsea legend Didier Drogba on a short term deal to bolster their options up front, amid his dispute with Shanghai Shenhau.

But the speculative story undoubtedly came from the fact that Arsene Wenger had come close to signing the Ivorian star prior to his move to the Premier League, with no factual evidence to prove the wild claim.

As Ray Wilkins pointed out, even a man as self-confident as Didier Drogba would see joining the divisional and local rivals of a club he served for eight years and only left a matter of months ago a step too far.

Furthermore, Arsene Wenger was unlikely to match the £200k per week salary given to Drogba by his Chinese employers.
