Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was the hero for his nation as two saves during the penalty shoot-out win against Spain on Sunday ensured they reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup, and many Arsenal fans have urged their club to sign the 32-year-old, rated at £9m by Transfermarkt.
The host country came into the tournament as the lowest ranked side, but they will now face Croatia in the last eight following victory against the 2010 winners, with the CSKA Moscow stopper proving to be the hero at the weekend.
New Gunners boss Unai Emery has already signed Bayer Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno this summer, and considering Petr Cech and David Ospina are both at the club he seems unlikely to look for another unless both of those leave.
Nevertheless some Arsenal supporters, who also want their club to sign another 25-year-old World Cup quarter-finalist, were quick to identify Akinfeev as someone they want to sign on Twitter, and while one said “go get him”, another said “please sign #Akinfeev”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
