With the January transfer window just around the corner, Arsene Wenger has numerous question to ponder regarding the strength and depth of his Arsenal side as they look to mount a considerable title charge.

The Frenchman has proven his critics wrong to ensure the club keep pace with Premier League leaders Chelsea at the summit of the table, however, recruitment may be required for the club to win a first English crown since 2004.

The main reason the Gunners find themselves behind Chelsea is the passengers in the squad that continue to drag the quality and standard of football down. In recent weeks, injuries have occurred to key players and adequate replacements could not be found on the bench, so now Wenger is suffering as a result.

Some players should be chopped from the Gunners' squad this winter with suitable alternatives found to strengthen the overall squad.

Here are THREE players Arsenal should sell, and THREE players Arsenal should sign in their place.

The Spanish midfielder continues to find himself struggling for game time at Real Madrid, as Zinedine Zidane's side remain undefeated in 35 La Liga games.

Isco could be a significant upgrade on Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain and his ability to play a central role, along with a wider role, would give Wenger greater options while increasing his squad depth.

Considering the reputation Oxlade-Chamberlain came with when he joined Arsenal in 2011, the former Southampton midfielder's progress has not been up to scratch.

The Ox rarely produces a performance worthy of winning any match and instead has become a passenger in a successful Arsenal side.

A drop down to a midtable may be Oxlade-Chamberlain's only chance to become the player he is capable of being.

IN - Marquinhos

The Brazilian defender was more than impressive during the Gunners' two draws with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Regularly compared to his compatriot Thiago Silva, Marquinhos continues to develop into one of the continent's finest young defenders.

Any potential move for the Brazil international could cost the Gunners a record transfer fee but it would be money well spent by Arsene Wenger.

OUT - Gabriel Paulista

He's awful. It may sound harsh to be so blunt and forward when describing a player, but the Gunners' third choice centre-back continues to disappoint whenever called upon by the north Londoners.

Whether it's the English game or not, Gabriel is not suited to the fast-paced style of the Premier League and his decision making leaves a lot to be desired.

IN - Mahmoud Dahoud

Syrian-born Germany star Dahoud remains a significant cog in Borussia Monchengladbach's first-team.

During his time in the Bundesliga, Dahoud famously formed an impressive partnership with Granit Xhaka, and Wenger should try to reunite the duo once again.

Dahoud is an instant upgrade on Francis Coquelin and is injured far less regularly than Aaron Ramsey.

OUT - Francis Coquelin

Coquelin is good but can he be discussed as a long-term Arsenal player figuring his inability to adapt when required? The French midfielder is often criticised for his lack of energy and pace.

The fact remains there are more prolific and better capable midfielders out there for Wenger than Coquelin.

Wenger should try offload the Arsenal youth star and upgrade.
