Arsenal supporters have been suffering plenty with undoubtedly one of the worst defences they've had in their illustrious Premier League history. If Unai Emery is to make that worse then it would take some doing, although if he makes a move for Liverpool's free agent full-back Alberto Moreno, he would be doing just that.

What's the story?

According to The Mirror, Moreno is one player who Arsenal are interested in this summer. The fact that he's available for free, coming off of fairly reasonable £65,000 p/w wages (Spotrac) and has got a history of working with Emery means this one makes complete financial sense.

Unfortunately, the financial aspect of this move is the only part that makes much sense at all. After five years at Anfield, the 26-year-old has become something of a joke amongst supporters. His performances have been poor and his game time reflects that.

Massive downgrade

Emery already has two left-backs at the club. One of those is Moreno's countryman, Nacho Monreal, and at 33-years-old he's not quite the player he once was. That doesn't mean that he's not better than Moreno, though, and the Gunners would pick their Spaniard over the departing Liverpool one every day of the week.

The other left-sided defender that Emery has at his disposal is Sead Kolasinac, and whilst the Bosnian defender is much more of a wing-back than a full-back, he can certainly do a good job playing on the left side of a back five, bombing up and down the flank creating chances and helping out at the back.

Meanwhile, in the now-free-agent Moreno, the Gunners would be signing someone who can't really play either role as well as the two left-backs that already reside at The Emirates.

Transfer business does need to be done at the Emirates this summer without a doubt. On the bright side of the Moreno news, at least the club are shopping around and looking for full-backs to improve Emery's back line.

If they decide Moreno is the right candidate to do that though, it's going to be an awfully long season for Bernd Leno and all Gunners fans.
