On 6th March 2012, Arsenal and AC Milan contested the 2nd leg of a Champions League tie at the Emirates Stadium for a place in the quarter-final. Six years – almost to the day – later and the two meet again but this time the quarter-final spot on offer is considerably less prestigious.
However, it could be argued that given Arsenal’s slide and in particular, the pressure on Arsene Wenger, coupled with Milan’s desperation to make a statement on the European stage once again, the stakes are even higher this time round.
Neither side back in 2012 was a vintage one, considering the pedigree of the two clubs, but the Gunners still boasted the attacking prowess of Robin van Persie, experience in the form of Tomas Rosicky and potential by way of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
In fact, only Laurent Koscielny remains from the side who almost staged an epic comeback that night, winning 3-0 following a 4-0 drubbing at the San Siro.
Where are those players today and how many of them would Arsenal fans want to see in Arsenal shirt for tonight’s Europa League showdown?
