Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is hopeful that his club will soon reach an agreement with playmaker Mesut Ozil over a new contract.
Ozil, 29, has scored four times and registered six assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal during the 2017-18 campaign.
The German is yet to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, however, and will see his current deal expire at the end of the season.
Manchester United are still believed to be interested in Ozil, who is valued at £45m by transfermarkt.co.uk, despite signing Alexis Sanchez from the Gunners last week.
Wenger, however, is hopeful that an agreement will be reached ‘very soon’ as the Gunners look to avoid losing their star player for free at the end of the campaign.
Wenger told reporters:
“Our intention is to keep Ozil at the club. Hopefully, we will manage to do that very soon. Not close enough to be optimistic but not far enough to be pessimistic.
“He behaves like somebody who is completely focused and ready to commit but after that contract negotiations are what they are.”
Jack Wilshere is another that will see his Arsenal deal expire this summer, but the London club are also believed to be confident of signing the Englishman to a new contract.
Having been eliminated in the third round of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest, Arsenal have a free weekend ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Swansea City in the Premier League.
