Arsenal’s £7m transfer fight & Wenger should hijack United move – Best of AFC

It’s unlike Arsene Wenger to conduct his transfer business early. Last summer the Frenchman left it late before hurriedly scouring the deadline day isle for a bargain or two. So the signing of Lukas Podolski before the season has even closed it’s curtains indicates he’s out to avoid the mistakes made last year. But one lingering question remains. Has Podolski been brought in to partner Robin Van Persie or replace him? Comments from the Dutchman remarking that he’ll sit down with Wenger and Arsenal officials to discuss a contract extension point to the former. It’s a shrewd move from Van Persie who’s immediate focus will be on earning maximum points from the Gunners’ final game of the season and securing automatic qualification to the Champions League. Finishing third this season would represent a stunning achievement for Wenger and his side considering they appeared to be in dire straits in the early stages.

This week on FFC talk of who will replace the immortal Pat Rice in the dugout next season heats up as the Gunners attempt to vanquish the Spuds in their transfer pursuit.

Quote of the Week

“My desire and my wish is to find an agreement with Robin van Persie to extend the contract. If that wouldn’t happen, we’ll still want him to stay but I am more focused on the first situation. I think what is important for us is that we find an agreement with him to be happy and finish his career here.” Arsene Wenger admits he’d want captain Robin Van Persie to stay even if he doesn’t sign a new contract this summer
