The 25-year-old has hardly featured for the Blues during the early stages of the new Premier League season, sparking reports that Mourinho does not have him in his immediate first-team plans.
But he has been told by the Portuguese boss that he will not be allowed to leave unless it is for a club abroad and he is desperate for first team football ahead of next summers World Cup in Brazil.
Mourinho’s comments will be yet another blow for Arsene Wenger as he attempts to bring in at least four new faces at the Emirates before Tuesday’s transfer window deadline.
However, he still has options in the shape of Real Madrid quartet Iker Casillas, Angel di Maria, Mesut Ozil and Karim Benzema to consider, as well as Newcastle’s French midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who has his heart set on a move to London.
The Gunners’ North London rivals Tottenham were also reportedly interested in Mata but, with Ajax’s Christian Eriksen and Roma’s Erik Lamela expected sign in the coming days, it appears they have dropped their interest in the midfielder.
