Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard must axe Trezeguet

Aston Villa have gone from strength to strength since the arrival of Steven Gerrard in November who has now taken the club from an abysmal start to the season in 16th place when the Liverpudlian arrived, to 12th in the Premier League, picking up four wins from his first seven games in charge of the side.

The former Rangers manager will now go into his first-ever Premier League transfer window with the club, and will be expected to make the right decisions with both incoming transfers and offloading players that aren’t part of the future plans at Villa Park.

How much did Ezri Konsa cost Aston Villa?

One player who should be in line for the chop from the Aston Villa squad is Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan, otherwise known as Trezeguet.

The winger has failed to make a single start for the first team in any competition for the Villains this season through injury, whilst currently sitting on £47k-p/w at the club, which is something Gerrard will need to take a closer look at, making a decision on whether to let go of the forward or not, with 18 months left on his contract.

Trezeguet has been out for the last eight months after sustaining a horrific knee injury back in April 2021, and made his return to competitive football this month in a Premier League 2 game in which he scored against Birmingham City, however, the club has come a long way since the attacker last played for the first team.

The recently appointed Villa manager did include Trezeguet in his squad when the Villa team made the trip to Merseyside to play Liverpool, and hailed the forward “professional” when speaking in the game’s press conference;

“He’s obviously worked extremely hard before we walked through the door in the last four weeks. We’ve seen a real professional player who wants to go above and beyond to the level he was at prior to his injury so we’ll keep trying to build his fitness up. He needs games, he needs training and it’ll take time.”

Will Gerrard sell Trezeguet in January?

Since the 27 year old’s injury problems, the club have signed Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia who both play regularly in the team, and now with the Egyptian’s return to the squad, Gerrard has a task on his hands to rotate another attacker into an already crowded forward line, so it could really make sense to offload the £9m-rated gem in the January transfer window to relieve the headache of not being able to rotate enough for the player to get good match fitness or first team football.
