Aston Villa captain lays into his soft team-mates & questions desire to stay at club

Aston Villa captain Micah Richards has labelled his team “too easy to play against” ahead of their crucial weekend match against Watford and has claimed that some players may not be bothered by the prospect of relegation.

The Villans are rock-bottom of the Premier League table after a disastrous start to the season and are in possession of the worst goal difference in the division, -14.

Their woeful form cost Tim Sherwood his job, and since the arrival of Remi Garde things haven’t looked much better, albeit they managed a creditable 0-0 draw with Manchester City in the Frenchman’s first match.

With only one win this season – against Bournemouth on the opening weekend – many are tipping Villa for the drop, and captain Richards has called on his team to turn things around and stop making things easy for their opponents with their approach to the game:

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it, we’ve got too many nice players and we’re too easy to play against,” he told The Telegraph. “Everybody seems to be – I wouldn’t say passing the blame – but they don’t want to run that extra mile and take responsibility

“When we’ve got the ball we’re fine but defensively we’re too nice and it’s too easy to get past us. We haven’t got the players who have the mentality to not lose the game.”

Richards went on to suggest that some players are simply not worried about the prospect of relegation:

“There’s a few good players in the team and they’re probably thinking, ‘If Villa get relegated I’ll get a move in the summer’ – but it doesn’t work like that any more.”
