Aston Villa’s ambitions to gain automatic promotion to the English Premier League took a critical blow on Tuesday night after they were defeated 3-1 at home to bottom half Queens Park Rangers.
With the Championship schedule thick and fast right now, Steve Bruce’s side know they have to maintain momentum if they’re to finish second but now find themselves seven points behind Cardiff City.
After a mammoth result against Wolves on Saturday, it was always a big ask to follow that up so soon after, but fans were still expecting them to take care of a team struggling for form over the last couple of months.
Fans were left perplexed by some of Bruce’s team selection calls, most notably the decision to play 33-year-old Mile Jedinak just days after an energy sapping performance at the weekend.
The midfielder looked off the pace all evening and supporters noted he was a big contributing factor to their inability to win.
They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance and Bruce’s decision to select him…
I wouldn’t of played jedinak night, for all the slack o gave him for starting Saturday he done a job then, but asking an 89 year old to play CDM twice in 72 hours is madness #avfc

Some of our players need a rest for sure….Jedinak and Hourihane looked very jaded in midfield…..Bjarnason and Lansbury on Sat to freshen midfield up #avfc

Think it's telling that after Saturday's draining encounter, Wolves made four changes tonight. Bruce couldn't expect a performance from the same 11 and should have made changes. At the very least, Birkir should have been in for Jedinak. #AVFC

Said it before and will say it again, Jedinak just doesn’t work in this kind of game…useless at home unless it’s in a derby where you have to be gritty…should have made a couple of changes from Saturday #avfc

Bjarnason for Jedinak Saturday please #avfc

Jedinak is awful. Bjarnason must start next game. Shocking tonight 2nd place be difficult to get now #avfc

Word can’t describe how wrong Bruce got that tonight; Jedinak has NEVER been able to play Sat-Tues🙈 Should have been BB for Jedi for the start & Hogan for Grabban at half time. Instead, (against a Holloway team no less) goes to a back 3 and route one for 40 minutes😑 #avfc

Blimey. We fucked that right up. Mistake to play Jedinak and Hourihane against weaker teams. Neither good enough in possession when we need to dictate the play. #avfc

Only mistake I’d say bruce made was jedinak, we’ve got Bolton next who are a physical side and today I think his old legs couldn’t take it. Hopefully he’ll be fit enough for Bolton
