Gary Gardner remains contracted to Aston Villa, but the midfielder is currently on loan with his parent club’s bitter rivals Birmingham City.
Gardner came through the youth system at Villa, and has scored once in 46 first-team appearances since debuting during the 2011-12 campaign.
The midfielder only made one appearance for Villa last term, however, and is currently representing Birmingham in the Championship.
The 26-year-old has a contract at Villa Park until the summer of 2020, but it seems unlikely that he will represent the club again.
That is following Gardner’s decision to ‘like’ a Birmingham fans’ post on Instagram, which suggested that ‘the city is blue’.

Gardner’s allegiance is seemingly now with Birmingham despite his deep Villa roots, and it would be fair to say that the midfielder’s activity on social media has not gone down very well with his parent club’s supporters.
A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Villa fans can be seen below:
Definitely has some issues. Not the sharpest tool in the box.

He wasn’t, isn’t and never will be good enough to be an Aston Villa football player.
