According to The Telegraph, James Collins is currently training with Aston Villa as the central defender eyes a contract at Villa Park.

Collins is currently available on a free transfer, having left West Ham United at the end of last season.

A number of clubs, including Ipswich Town, have been linked with moves for the experienced defender, but he is currently training with Villa, according to The Telegraph.

Villa boss Steve Bruce is said to be open to the possibility of offering 6ft 2in Collins a short-term deal in a bid to boost his options in a problem position.

And the news has come as a boost to the Championship outfit's supporters, who no longer want to see Mile Jedinak line up alongside James Chester at the back.

Collins made over 100 appearances for Villa between 2009 and 2012 before returning to West Ham, and has a wealth of top-flight experience.
