According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are interested in signing Brentford defender Yoann Barbet during the January transfer window.
Barbet, 25, will see his current deal with Brenford expire at the end of the season, and it is understood that there is a strong chance he will leave at the start of 2019.
Stoke City are also being linked with the Frenchman, but it is thought that Villa boss Dean Smith’s strong relationship with Barbet places the club in a strong position when it comes to securing his signature.
Indeed, Smith worked with the defender at Brentford before taking the Villa job, and is seemingly now keen on bringing him to Villa Park in the January transfer window.
The Villa fans have been reacting to the speculation on social media, and there are some differing opinions when it comes to whether he would be a good acquisition.
A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:
Sign him purely because of this??https://t.co/1zS0eumMqQ

Barbet would be a very good signing IMO. Can play both LB and CB. Smith knows him. Contract up in summer, so would be fairly cheap. Sign him up IMO. #avfc

Wouldn’t mind that he’s very good under dean and can take a tasty free kick

He’s a good player i have seen him live scouting at Stoke vs Brentford and few times on tv this season. Would prefer Chris Mepham out of the two though if we had a choice 😀
