Per a report from L’Equipe, Aston Villa are in advanced negotiations to sign Reims defender Bjorn Engels.
The defender only signed for the French side this year after initially spending the 2018/19 term on loan in Ligue 1 from Olympiacos.
If he does indeed join the club, he’ll be the fourth defender to arrive through the doors of Villa Park this summer.
The Villans have already concluded deals for Kortney Hause, Matt Targett, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa.
However, responding to claims that they were targeting another defender, Villa fans were split over a possible move.
Some were frustrated as one simply urged the club to stop signing defensive players whilst another said they should now be trying to land attackers. One fan was meanwhile worried that they weren’t signing individuals with Premier League experience.
Yet there was positive reaction too. A further tweet suggested that Villa’s biggest weakness was depth and therefore signing the 24-year-old would be a good thing. He was also lauded as a very good player by another supporter.
Engels played 33 times in the French top-flight last term, winning 3.1 aerial duels in the process as he enjoyed a hugely productive temporary stay in France.
Here’s the best of the discussion.
Stop with the defenders

Feel like we really need to sign some attackers. I know we have Wes & Kodj but we have no idea if Wes is going to shine and I really don’t think Kodj has got what it takes for the prem. Great to see depth in defence after last season but if Wes got injured we’d really struggle

Can we stop buying defenders please @AVFCOfficial

Slightly worried now, not much premier league experience has been brought… I am sure we can finish 17th at worst…

Stop signing defenders, need a goalkeeper and a CAM.

Will be interesting what system we go for, Smith likes 4231 but away vs the big sides 3 cb’s is a good shout. I’d quite like a back 3 of Konsa (RCB) a no nonsense cb in the middle & Mings (LCB). Both wide cb’s both excellent on the ball

I know nothing about this guy, but more depth at the back can only be a good thing IMO, it does break my heart a bit tho to think that Chester is getting less and less likely to play, my heart wants him playing regularly in the prem but my head says he might not be up to it

Our biggest weakness is depth this can only be a good thing imo
