We’re just a few days away from 2020, and that means that the January transfer window is just around the corner.

Of course, this means that transfer rumour season is well and truly upon us.

What’s the story then?

Everyone is gearing up for a month of refreshing every news website every few minutes desperately checking to see what’s going on with their club, and for Aston Villa the transfer links have started early as reports in The Daily Mail have stated that they’re one of the clubs interested in Jamie Hamilton.

However, Villa Park may not be the teenage defender’s destination as they’ve named Brighton and Burnley as the two sides preparing bids for Hamilton, who is rated at £1.5m.

But the fact of the matter is that losing out on Williams wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing for Villa at this moment in time.

FFP situation

The Daily Mail also reported earlier this month that Villa are on the verge of landing themselves in some hot water when it comes to FFP, so spending £1.5m this January on a player who isn’t needed seems like a risk not worth taking.

Of course, £1.5m isn’t much in football these days, but every penny counts when you’re in a situation such as the one the Midlands club are reportedly in, which could end in fines based on the punishments other clubs have received.

Villa already have more centre-halves than they need with Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, James Chester, Bjorn Engels and Kourtney Hause all already in the squad.

Hamilton may be a decent long-term signing as he’s just 17, but that in itself highlights why signing him really shouldn't be a priority at this moment in time.

Villa should be focusing on who they get rid of to avoid FFP punishments, not making investments that run the risk of landing them in even more trouble.

In other news, Villa fans have been reacting to one potential big-name departure.
