Aston Villa’s fight to stave off relegation this season took another big blow on Saturday afternoon.
Dean Smith’s side fell to their third successive defeat in the Premier League, as they slipped up 2-0 to Southampton at St Mary’s.
And one man who certainly didn’t enjoy the greatest of games, was full-back Frederic Guilbert. The Villa ace came up against Southampton winger Moussa Djenepo, and he just didn’t seem to know how to deal with him.
As per Sofascore, Djenepo completed six of his seven attempted dribbles, and provided four key passes as he proved to be a major attacking threat for the Saints.
Guilbert on the other hand, finished the game with a shocking 54% pass accuracy, completed just two of his nine attempted long balls, lost possession 24 times, and failed to win 11 of his 16 total duels.
After seeing his performance, Villa fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the defender.
I’m sorry but after that performance Smith has got to go , no clue what so ever. It’s the 1st time this season iv said it but nothing is changing , the squad isn’t getting better. Guilbert shocking , Marvellous and Luiz 😡 so easy to play against

Absolutely awful today. If that’s lack of fight carries on we are going down 😩 Guilbert was shocking, too many don’t seem bothered #avfc

He’s spot on. You can blame him but cannot say the players are any better, trezeguet Guilbert Nakamba all absolutely woeful today.

Guilbert, Nakamba, El Ghazi all seem to think this is just a paycheck and dont actually care about us staying up. get rid

Guilbert looked lost

A couple of fans suggested that Guilbert’s poor display meant he should be benched by Smith for the upcoming games.
Guilbert, Luiz, El Ghazi should all be benched after today

Maybe we need to sit Guilbert. I like him but he gives away so manu stupid free kicks, and we’re so bad at defending them.

One Villa supporter delivered a particularly stinging verdict, suggesting that the side may have been better off if they had just ten men.
Another stupid foul by Guilbert who has been HORRIBLE today. Might have been better with 10 men.

When you’re fighting for every single point, particularly down at the bottom, you just cannot have individual performances like the one produced by Guilbert.
The 25-year-old was a major hindrance for his side, and his boss will have been tearing his hair out on the side-lines. The fact that he committed a game-high five fouls simply illustrates how much he struggled to deal with things legally.
Smith will be hoping that Guilbert drastically picks up his form.
