According to John Percy at the Telegraph, Douglas Luiz is already showing why Manchester City’s loss is Aston Villa’s gain, assuring fans that he would only leave the club for a huge profit.

What's the word?

With the Brazilian already showing bright glimpses at Villa Park, a number of supporters are understandably worried about the buy-back clause which was engrained as part of their £15m deal with Manchester City.

Despite an early mistake in the Bournemouth match, allowing the visitors to double their lead in quick succession, Luiz atoned for it in impressive fashion by scoring a glorious effort of his own from long-range.

Aside from that error, he was rather composed, recording a pass success rate of 91.2% - though it has been his performances in training which nearly earned him a start on the opening weekend despite much of a pre-season due to the wait for his work permit.

If his form continues deep into the season, Pep Guardiola may well come back calling sooner than expected but if he does, Villa won't be selling the player for anywhere near that £15m meaning they should make a hefty profit.

A 'win-win' situation

Luiz is quickly becoming the first-choice option as the anchorman in Dean Smith’s midfield – that was most obvious after the Villa boss dropped Conor Hourihane after just one game against the Champions League finalists, Tottenham Hotspur, despite gaining a 7.06 rating and averaging a passing success rate of 88% - as per WhoScored.

The most concerning aspect of the 21-year-old coming to Villa Park was the buy-back clause that City demanded as part of the move.

However, it should be seen as a win-win for Villa.

They are getting a top young talent – one that showed all of his quality against Real Madrid last season for just £15m. Luiz recorded a 90.7% passing accuracy rate against the Spanish giants last term, making three clearances, one interception and won 100% of his tackles.

If his level of performances continue as the season draws on, and City come crawling, they’ll make a healthy profit which they could use to reinvest in the position or strengthen in other areas.

Don’t forget, Smith also signed Marvelous Nakamba this summer and Hourihane has given a glimpse showing that he can fill in there too.

City signed Rodri this summer so they may not even foresee a comeback for the player Guardiola rates ever so highly.
