Aston Villa line up shock summer move for former Sunderland manager

Aston Villa are lining up a move for Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy as they prepare for life in the Championship, according to the Daily Mail.

Remi Garde left Villa Park last week after a dismal four months in charge, with the Frenchman unable to improve on their league position.

McCarthy is understood to be an attractive candidate for the club’s hierarchy following his track record in the second tier of English football.

Previously, he has masterminded promotion winning campaigns while in charge of both Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Though he has a relatively small budget at Portman Road, the 57-year old former Republic of Ireland manager has impressed again by leading them to eighth position.

Nigel Pearson is another to be linked with the vacant Midlands post, though bosses are understood to be wary of the number of off-field controversies the former Leicester City coach can bring.

David Moyes has also been touted as a potential candidate, though may have options in the Premier League this summer.
