Aston Villa plot January Man United raid

Aston Villa are ready to push through a £7.5m deal to keep Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverley when the January transfer window opens, according to reports from The Mirror.

The 25-year-old switched to Villa Park over the summer from the Red Devils after slipping down the pecking order under Louis van Gaal.

And Villains boss Paul Lambert has been so impressed with the playmaker that he’s keen to activate a clause in the temporary deal to keep him in the Midlands permanently.

Cleverley’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, which will allow teams to discuss a Bosman deal with the passer when the calendar switches to 2015.

Although Villa’s chiefs would prefer to snap up their man for nothing, the risk of losing the player to a rival is one that Lambert is keen to avoid.

Cleverley endured a difficult 2013/14 season at United under David Moyes, slipping from a regular in he England international set-up to a scapegoat figure at OId Trafford during a disappointing campaign.
