Aston Villa put bitter rivals’ former manager on Garde-successor short-list

Steve Bruce is a leading candidate on Aston Villa’s short-list of managers to succeed Remi Garde, according to reports from the Mirror.

The former Manchester United defender is known as a promotion specialist, and it’s thought that his Championship record has been enough for the Villans to overlook his Birmingham City ties.

Bruce twice took the St Andrew’s side up to the Premier League – he has performed the same feat with Hull, too – and reports claim that he’s among the top targets to succeed Garde ahead of 2016/17 as the Midlands club set about securing an immediate return to the top tier.

Villa sacked the Frenchman on Monday evening after a miserable spell in charge of the club – only three wins in all competitions since arriving in November – and relegation is all but mathematically certain with just six games to play.

However, much may depend on Bruce’s Hull’s promotion push, with the Tigers currently fourth in the Championship.
