Aston Villa are hopeful that Deportivo La Coruna will sign Carles Gil on a permanent deal at the end of the season, according to the Birmingham Mail.

What's the story?

The Midlands outfit recruited the Spaniard from Valencia in 2015 for a fee thought to be in the region of £3.5m.

Many were excited by the young player’s talent, but his appearances in the first team began to dwindle and he was eventually sent on loan to Deportivo, where he has spent the last two seasons.

According to the Birmingham Mail, Villa aim to sell Gil to Deportivo when the summer transfer window opens up, but the attacker has made just one appearance since Clarence Seedorf became manager.

Gil has made just five appearances for the Spanish outfit since the turn of the year.

Should Villa give him another chance?

Regardless of where the Villans will be playing football next season, Gil has not shown enough on his loan spells to warrant a return to the first team under manager Steve Bruce.

At the age of 25, the forward should be performing at a higher level on a more consistent basis, and unfortunately that does not seem to be the case.

The forward, who scored three goals in 34 appearances in all competitions for Villa, will have just one year remaining on his contract after this summer.

It would make sense for Villa to sell now in order to prevent the player from walking for free at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.
