According to Alan Biggs in The Star, Sheffield United are considering Jermain Defoe as a January transfer target.

What’s the word?

The Blades are currently going strong in the Championship and sit only three points off top spot. However, if they’re to maintain their promotion push and avoid burnout before the end of the gruelling Championship campaign they must bolster their ranks in January.

At 36 years of age, Defoe is coming towards the end of his playing days. The 57-cap former England international may only be on the fringes of Bournemouth’s squad in the Premier League now, but the veteran striker could still have an impact in the second tier.

Age aside, 5ft 7in Defoe has long been a prolific goalscorer and can boast having over 250 career goals to his name.

Before the Blades can entice him to Bramall Lane though, Aston Villa should make a move for Defoe themselves.

Fresh firepower

Since the sacking of Steve Bruce after a dreadful start, Villa have been resurgent under the guidance of Dean Smith. The Villans will now fancy their chances of making a push for the play-offs where they’ll hope to make up for last season’s play-off final heartbreak.

In order to get there, though, they need more firepower than the likes of Tammy Abraham and Jonathan Kodjia are currently providing.

Given that he is seemingly surplus to requirements with the Cherries, and has a Transfermarkt valuation of just £2.25 million, Defoe could be an affordable solution to Villa’s striking woes in the winter transfer window.
