Aston Villa should join Bournemouth in £10m Callum McGregor race

According to a report by The Scottish Sun on Sunday (December 9, Page 57), Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor is a £10m January target for Premier League side Bournemouth, and Championship club Aston Villa should hijack any potential deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Scottish Sun on Sunday reported that Cherries boss Eddie Howe is keen to bring the 25-year-old south of the border following the serious injury suffered by Lewis Cook, which has ruled the former Leeds United man out of action for the remainder of the season.

The Scottish Sun on Sunday also said that the Scottish Premiership leaders want £10m for the Scotland international, who has often excelled in a holding midfield role for them this term, keeping captain Scott Brown out of the team and on the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks.

The quoted price may seem low given his form and importance to the Glasgow giants, but given they sold Moussa Dembele for just under £20m in the summer it may not be too inaccurate.

Why should Aston Villa move for him?

The Midlands outfit are in good form under manager Dean Smith and are now four points adrift of the Championship play-off positions following their 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Friday night, but the former Brentford boss may already be looking at potential reinforcements in January.

One area that could be a concern is in the middle of the park, where the likes of Conor Hourihane, Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak perhaps aren’t up to the required level to partner impressive summer addition John McGinn.

The versatile McGregor, who can play in a holding role, further forward or on either flank, certainly would be having also scored four goals and provided a further six assists in 32 appearances in all competitions so far this term, and he would be the quality central midfield companion that McGinn has been crying out for all season long.
