According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are battling it out with Leeds for the signature of Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Ed Williams, but the Birmingham-based club do not need to be signing unknown quantities at this time.

What’s the story?

Football Insider report that both Villa and Leeds sent scouts to watch Williams in the 5-0 FA Cup qualifying victory over Atherstone Town on Saturday.

So far this season, the attacking midfielder has netted six goals in seven games for the National League North side, which has clearly caught the attention of two of the Championship’s biggest clubs.

The 23-year-old signed a one year contract with the Harriers in the summer, so could be available on a free in the summer although it is unlikely that the National League North side would let such an asset leave so easily.

The report from Football Insider also claims that Derby County and Ipswich Town are also interested in the Kidderminster man, as well as a number of clubs in League’s One and Two as is to be expected, which could start a bidding war in January.

Tough times

This would be something that Villa and boss Steve Bruce do not need to be drawn in to at the time where they could be facing a points deduction for failing to meet Financial Fair Play guidelines.

During the summer, the club faced a winding up order from HMRC over unpaid tax bills and were in huge financial difficulty until Dr Tony Xia sold a controlling stake to billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

Although Williams’ record this season seems fantastic it will be a long wait to see if he can adapt to playing at a much higher level, and Villa do not have the luxury of being able to wait for results as they sit in 13th in the Championship table.
