Aston Villa advanced into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers thanks to goals from Anwar El Ghazi and captain for the night Ahmed Elmohamady.

Dean Smith's men will now face this weekend's Premier League opponents Liverpool in the next round of the competition.

The 48-year-old boss made nine changes with only Trezeguet and Douglas Luiz keeping their places from the Manchester City defeat, meaning a whole host of players were granted a rare opportunity to impress.

None more so than Keinan Davis, who fans have long demanded is given a chance over club-record signing Wesley.

But against a Wolves side that, without John Ruddy and Ryan Bennett, had an average age of just 19.7, the young striker failed to take the golden opportunity that was handed to him.

Per SofaScore, in just 50 minutes of action, the 21-year-old failed to record a single attempt at goal, conceded two fouls, and lost possession five times from only 20 touches.

It was a miserable evening all round for Davis, which won't do his Premier League credentials any favours as if he can't do it against a backline full of youngsters, then what hope does he have in doing it against the elite like Virgil van Dijk this weekend.

He may have to wait until the next round of this competition next month to even get another shot at leading the line under Smith but by then the returning Jonathan Kodjia, who was substituted on in his place, could have taken his chance or Wesley might have ramped up his goalscoring exploits onto the next level.

It seems hard to imagine Davis having much of a future in the west Midlands, especially after performances like this one - it has already been reported that the hierarchy at the club will set aside £20m for a new forward in January, and that will only hinder his prospects even more.

Which would be a real shame considering assistant coach Richard Kelly believes he has substantial potential, before the game he said: "Keinan is a player you look at and go ‘wow, he’s got some potential."
