Aston Villa and Watford are set to make moves to sign Domagoj Vida from Besiktas in January, as reported by Turkish-Football.

However, they could be in danger of going overboard by attempting to bring him to the Midlands.

What's the story?

The two Premier League clubs have made enquiries to the Turkish Super Lig outfit about signing the 30-year-old during the winter window.

Besiktas are said to have turned down offers for the defender, who has 79 caps for Croatia, in each of the two most recent transfer windows.

However, they are not in the position to do so again, as they are looking to save on their wage budget and Vida is said to be the highest earner at the club, getting around €3.5m-per-year (£2.9m).

Going overboard

Villa could be seen as going overboard on centre-backs if they do make a move for Vida, considering they already have five at the club.

With Tyrone Mings, Bjorn Engels, Ezri Konsa, James Chester and Kortney Hause all competing for a place in the team when fit, it is hard to see how Smith could keep everyone happy without selling one of those players.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Michael Owen, Garth Crooks or Mark Lawrenson?

Vida has shown that he can be effective this season, as his 13 league appearances have produced two goals and seen the Croatian contribute to six clean sheets.

In terms of his individual defensive numbers, Vida has an average of 1.3 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and 2 clearances per game.

If you compare that to those already at Villa, he'd sit behind Konsa in terms of tackles but level with Engels. As for interceptions, he'd rank as the club's best.

Even so, it is difficult to see how Smith will be able to bring the Croatian into the fold while still keeping squad balance.

In other news, one Villa man could be at risk of losing his place in the team.
