The Sun has revealed that Everton defender Ashley Williams has attracted the interest of promotion hopefuls Aston Villa. Although past his best, it would represent an incredibly shrewd signing by the Villans if he did move.

What's the word?

Williams, who was a key member of the Wales side at Euro 2016, has witnessed somewhat of a fall from grace over the last few years. Having made a move to Everton he's fallen down the pecking order and as a result, was loaned out to Stoke for the season.

It's been another difficult campaign for the defender but with his contract at the Toffees coming to an end over the summer, it could be a chance of a fresh start for the 34-year-old.

Given his current deal is coming to an end, then he'd be available on a free transfer for any potential suitors.

However, Villa aren't the only club after him according to The Sun. Also chasing the centre back are Wayne Rooney's MLS side, DC United, and recently relegated Huddersfield.

Shrewd business for Villa

At 34, it may be a questionable signing for Villa, especially given they possess a number of defenders already in their 30s.

Despite that, it would be great business by Dean Smith if he were able to wrap up a deal for the Everton man.

At the moment, Villa have three defenders on loan at the club in Axel Tuanzebe, Kortney Hause and the stand out Tyrone Mings. Their futures remain uncertain ahead of the summer window but if they all depart, they'll need to bolster their defensive ranks.

Costing nothing, Williams would be the perfect addition and given he has Premier League experience, he'd be a shrewd acquisition should they achieve promotion.

With Jack Grealish attracting interest from Tottenham and Crystal Palace, Villa would be sensible to invest in players at the opposite end of the pitch, rather than splashing out on defenders.

As such, the Welshman would be ideal for the Villans on a free transfer.
