Aston Villa’s poor run in the Premier League continued on Saturday afternoon as for the third time this season they dropped points from a winning position.

The west Midlands club sit precariously in the bottom three having won just one of their seven matches so far this term – that came against an Everton side that have now lost three straight league games by a two-goal margin.

Villa took the lead against Burnley just after half an hour as Anwar El Ghazi turned in Frederic Guilbert’s cross, but former West Brom man Jay Rodriguez headed home the equaliser in the second half.

Star man John McGinn restored their lead after having a previous attempt chalked off earlier in the match by VAR, only for Chris Wood to level things up yet again just a couple of minutes later.

Dean Smith’s men had their chances, registering a total of 16 shots during the match, but only three of those were on target, per WhoScored.

All of those attempts were shared out between four members of the squad, though most surprisingly, their striker failed to contribute towards the one key aspect demanded from that role.

Club-record man Wesley might have netted twice this season, but his recent performances are quickly pushing him towards flop status in B6 considering he cost the club a vast £22m.

Per SofaScore, the 22-year-old won just 14% of his aerial duels - another key component to playing the lone striker role - on top of losing possession five times and conceding four fouls.

It was definitely an afternoon to forget for the Brazilian.

But not all of the blame can be attributed towards Wesley – he is their only fit option in attack after all.

That begs the question, why didn’t Smith push the boat out to add a second forward during the summer?

There were links to Neal Maupay and Mbaye Diagne over the summer, but nothing came to fruition.

It’s a lot to ask of someone whose only experience in England, let alone in an elite league, is from seven appearances over the past two months.

The Villa boss has to be blamed for going into their Premier League comeback season with just one substantial option upfront.

It could be a catastrophic mistake.
