Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has revealed talks have already started with key striker Christian Benteke over a new deal.
The Belgium international still has three years to run on his current deal at Villa Park but the club are determined to sort out fresh terms to ward off interest from several top clubs.
Benteke’s 23 goals in his debut season in the Premier League means he is hot property with Spurs and Arsenal among the clubs in England who are keen, while German Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund are also said to be interested.
Lambert has revealed Villa officials have met with the striker and his agent and he is hopeful a new deal can be agreed soon.
“We have been speaking for the last few weeks there so we will see what happens,” Lambert said.
“I think it’s important we keep the nucleus of lads we have here and add to that. It’s not just about one individual. Christian, since the turn of the year, is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in goalscoring.
“He has been fantastic in the way he has been performing, but every one of them deserves praise for what they have done.”
