Aston Villa’s Birkir Bjarnason is a transfer target for Middlesbrough according to The Birmingham Mail.
The 30-year-old midfielder joined Villa in January 2017 and has gone on to make 33 league appearances for the club, scoring three goals and assisting two.
The reliable defensive midfielder represented Iceland at the World Cup and is now attracting a lot of interest according to the report, with Middlesbrough, Trabzonspor and several Italian clubs keen on signing the 6ft international.
At this point, there’s very little Aston Villa can do to stop another player leaving Villa Park with the club undergoing such financial difficulty.
Bjarnason has proved himself to be a consistent and dependable performer for Steve Bruce, but if they can raise funds from his sale that will allow them to bring in the new faces they need then the club can’t afford to say no, especially if they can get something around his £1.8million valuation on Transfermarkt.
It’s a sad state of affairs but there will be bigger losses this summer than Bjarnason who didn’t even feature in their play-off final match against Fulham.
