Villa chasing Jake Cooper swoop

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are plotting a summer move for Millwall’s Jake Cooper.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Villans are believed to be eyeing up the 25-year-old, who has been in excellent form for the Lions.

Cooper’s efforts have helped Millwall into 11th in the Championship, where they are seven points off the playoff positions.

The centre-back – who was of interest to Scottish giants Rangers in 2018 – is someone who the south Londoners don’t want to lose according to Football Insider, although they are bracing themselves for offers due to the former Reading man’s fine displays.

Dean Smith could do with a real no-nonsense defender to shore up his backline, as his side have conceded the most goals in the Premier League this season with 52 concessions in 27 outings – just under two goals per game.

Goodbye to Bjorn Engels’ calamities

In Aston Villa’s recent 3-2 defeat to Tottenham, centre-back Bjorn Engels was forced to start alongside Ezri Konsa and Kortney House because of an injury to Tyrone Mings, and he had an afternoon to forget on an occasion where he could’ve potentially staked a claim for a starting role.

The Belgian defender fouled Steven Bergwijn in the penalty area to allow Heung-min Son to score, with a reckless challenge when he perhaps should’ve just stayed on his feet.

Then, having atoned for that error with a great header to make it 2-2, he then allowed the ball to slip under his foot in the 93rd minute before Son raced through and slotted home a last-gasp winner, costing the Villans a precious point in their battle for survival.

If Cooper – who averages 0.6 tackles per game, while Mings records 0.4 for a comparison – arrived at Villa Park, one doubts he will go straight into Smith’s backline.

However, when injuries occur, Cooper’s arrival would mean that Smith doesn’t have to take a gamble on the error-prone Engels, instead having a no-nonsense defender to call upon.

In other news, these Aston Villa fans have been sparked into a reaction after Tyrone Mings’ comments…
