Aston Villa have had their fair share on injury woes but there is positive news to report as John McGinn could be back for the Premier League run-in.
The Villans have ten very important matches left to decide their fate, and whether or not they will return to the Championship, but it seems that McGinn could even be back to play against Chelsea this weekend.
The Scot was one of their best players and received numerous plaudits this campaign for his impressive performances, and he has been missed since he picked up an ankle injury against Southampton almost three months ago.
Dean Smith’s side have won three out of nine league games since that point, evidencing how weak they are without the 25-year-old, but McGinn could be back soon.
Commenting on the midfielder’s potential comeback, as reported by BirminghamLive, Smith said:
“John McGinn is nearer. He trained with us.
“We’ve not had him training in contact sessions yet, he’s been involved in possession and shape work. He’s getting to where we want him to be.
“He’s had a CT Scan today to make sure there’s a full union of the fracture. He feels really good which is the important thing.
“He’ll be pushing me for Chelsea, that’s for sure.”
McGinn’s return should be a great source of encouragement for the players and fans alike, particularly as he proved key in the business end of last season, making six goal contributions in his nine final Championship games, as well as scoring twice in four play-off matches.
This season he has been equally as important at times, providing tremendous energy to enable himself to make a big difference in both attack and defence.
Villa miss his 2.3 dribbles and 2.5 tackles per game, as few other individuals in the squad possess that turnover ability, and it means attacks occur less.
His re-introduction could also help Jack Grealish thrive as the pair have built up an understanding that exists from last season, something which sets the Scotland international apart from other midfielders like Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz and Danny Drinkwater.
Another advantage of McGinn’s return is that the latter mentioned above will not be depended upon to play so often, as he has not been good enough since joining.
Meanwhile, Villa fans have been reacting to the news that the club could lose one of its top prospects…
