Former Aston Villa forward Kevin Phillips has claimed that Steve Bruce should have rotated his XI for the team’s last couple of matches.
Villa won three straight Championship fixtures between February 24 and March 10 to put themselves into contention for a top-two finish in England’s second tier.
Back-to-back defeats to Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers, however, have harmed the team’s challenge.
Villa are currently seven points off second-placed Cardiff City, who have a game in hand, and Phillips has said that Bruce should have made changes for the QPR fixture on March 13.
Phillips wrote in his column for the Express & Star:
“Bruce suggested he perhaps should have changed two or three players in the midweek fixture against QPR.
“It’s not a young squad he’s got there and he probably should have freshened it up. We’ve had that at Derby this season, a lot of these things become apparent after the event.”
Villa, whose supporters were particularly unhappy with the performance of one player at the weekend, lost 3-1 at home to QPR before suffering a 1-0 defeat at Bolton on Saturday afternoon.
Bruce’s side will attempt to return to winning ways when they travel to Hull City on March 31.
