Garde plots last chance saloon January swoop to save Aston Villa

January will see Remi Garde make one last roll of the dice at Aston Villa and try to sign QPR hitman Charlie Austin, reports the Daily Star.

The 26-year-old is out of contract in June and will be available on a free in the summer, but the French boss knows that may well be too late for the Villans and so is planning an £8m swoop in January to boost his ailing side.

Newcastle, Sunderland, West Brom and Bournemouth have all shown an interest in the striker, who is currently out of action with a hamstring injury, but it is Villa who are hoping to nab his signature and avoid the drop.

Owner Randy Lerner has promised a survival warchest in January, but Austin is also seen as the ideal man to lead an immediate return to the top flight, if the unthinkable happens and Garde’s side are relegated to the Championship.
