HYS: Should Aston Villa sign Gary Cahill?

Gary Cahill looks pretty much guaranteed to leave Chelsea this month – be it on loan or permanently – and apparent frontrunners Fulham have reportedly hit a roadblock in their pursuit of the former Bolton man, blowing the race for his signature wide open.

Like the Cottagers, Aston Villa are struggling to keep the ball out of the back of the net and are in desperate need of a leader to regiment the backline after John Terry’s retirement at the end of last season.

The Villans have leaked 23 goals since Dean Smith took over – the former Brentford boss has been largely unable to iron out the defensive frailties he was surely tasked with fixing when appointed as manager back in October 2018 – and could definitely do with a player of assistant coach Terry’s ilk.

While he may not be able to step in alongside James Chester and shore up the defence himself, the 38-year-old could do the next best thing by convincing former teammate Cahill to make the switch to Villa Park.

We think the move would be perfect for both Villa and Cahill – he is desperate for minutes – and it could be the signing that gives the Midlands outfit the push they need to secure a play-off spot.
