Alan Hutton has hinted that Aston Villa missed out on a good player in Matej Vydra during the January transfer window, as reported by Football Insider.

What did he say?

At the beginning of February, Vydra's agent, Ondrei Khovanets, suggested to Russian outlet Sport 24 that Villa had been showing interest in the 27-year-old during the window.

It was said that his client also held the attention of Rangers, a major Ukrainian club and two outfits from Moscow.

Hutton, who represented Villa 202 times during his own playing career, has suggested that the Czech Republic international would have been a useful signing for the Villans to make:

“I think he’d have been a great addition, I’ve played against him on numerous occasions and he’s definitely a thorn in your side – runs all day, works hard, scores goals, he’s quick.

“He’s really got everything you need and I think he would have been welcomed into the group. He seems like a good lad as well. He would have been a great acquisition for Villa, unfortunately, it hasn’t happened."

A useful player

Vydra has been used sporadically by Burnley this season, making just one start in the Carabao Cup, managing a further eight substitute appearances in the Premier League and FA Cup - however, he has still shown that he can be of use.

Sean Dyche's side lost 3-1 in his only start of the campaign, against Sunderland, but the 27-year-old highlighted his threat, working some space for himself before slipping the ball through to Jay Rodriguez to finish the move off.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans....

He also showed a moment of real quality to help earn a draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, when his perfectly weighted flick went directly into Jeff Hendrick's path, allowing the Republic of Ireland international to hit the ball first time and secure their equaliser.

There is not that much to go off considering the lack of game time he has had this campaign, but Vydra definitely had the potential to be a useful addition to Villa's squad.

Meanwhile, one of Villa's key men have not looked themselves in recent weeks.
