McAuley is not the John Terry replacement that Aston Villa are looking for

As reported by The Daily Record, Aston Villa are one of the teams interested in signing out-of-contract West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley this summer.

What’s the story?

Villa fans are facing a difficult summer transfer window after narrowly missing out on promotion to the English Premier League last season, with financial problems and player departures set to dominate the headlines over incoming talent.

John Terry has already left the club, leaving Steve Bruce searching for a capable defensive replacement that can get the job done in the Championship next term.

One name on his radar is out-of-contract international Gareth McAuley.

That’s according to The Daily Record, who say that the Villans are rivalling Steven Gerrard’s Rangers for his signature this summer.

The former West Brom man has played in the Premier League regularly for years, but does he have the quality and leadership skills that make him a viable option to replace Terry?

Can Villa get a good season out of him?

With 78 caps for Northern Ireland, over 200 career Premier League appearances and close to another 200 in the Championship, McAuley has more experience that most players currently plying their trade towards the top end of English football.

However, there is no doubt he is on the decline after failing to start regularly for the Baggies in the 2017/18 season and at 38 years of age another gruelling campaign in the English second-tier may prove to be a step too far.

John Terry was important for Villa but it’s important to remember that at his peak he was a world class stopper, far beyond the ability of McAuley, as important as he was for West Brom.

As a squad player he may not be the worst option to provide depth to the defensive line, but as a regular starter this is one Villa should absolutely avoid.
