The Aston Villa fans have been on social media debating whether midfielder Glenn Whelan should be handed a new contract by the club.
Whelan will see his current deal with Villa expire at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.
The 35-year-old has been heavily involved for the first team this season, scoring once and providing three assists in 30 appearances in all competitions.
A very experienced campaigner, Whelan is also a 85-time Republic of Ireland international and certainly knows his way around a football pitch.
The Villa fans are struggling to agree, however, when it comes to whether the midfielder, who arrived at the club from Stoke City in 2017, should be offered a fresh deal.
Whilst there are those who want the 5 ft 11 ace around heading into the 2019-2020 season, others feel that the club should cut their losses this summer.
A selection of the Twitter reaction from the Villa supporters can be seen below:
No. I like Whelan, always have, but we have to start buying and signing younger players. Keeping older players around is just dead money, and Smith has already discussed us building value within the squad, and there has to be sacrifices to do that. #AVFC

Honestly no I wouldn’t. Don’t get me wrong he’s done fantastic for us since the turn of the new year but we need to pack out the team with young, energetic lads that can just keep going…

I think so , he’s playing his best football under smith. May not play every game but we need the squad depth

He’s always showed his class in little spells but now he’s top class. He deserves at least a extra season and see we’re he is this time next season?? #UTV

Earned it. Definitely.

I would 100% have him for another year. Looks a different player under Smith and it would be beneficial to have him there behind the scenes.
A model pro and one of the few natural leaders we have.

na let him leave the club on a positive note with a good reception from the fans. i wouldn’t be opposed to a one-year extension but i think his time here is done as villa move in a new direction with smith
