Opinion: Dean Smith must target his former club in January to sign Daniel Bentley

Dean Smith was announced as the new Aston Villa boss earlier this week, and the former Brentford manager should go shopping at his old club in January to bring goalkeeper Daniel Bentley with him.

What’s the situation?

Villa recently sacked Steve Bruce after a poor run of form left the club floundering below midtable in the Championship. Having been rejected by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and Jose Mourinho’s former assistant Rui Faria, the hierarchy eventually settled on Smith.

The lifelong Villa fan has also brought one of his assistants, Richard O’Kelly, with him from the Bees, who will take on the same role as Chelsea legend John Terry.

Smith then has shown that he will not be afraid to poach personnel from his former club, and in the January transfer window he should make a move for goalkeeper Daniel Bentley to solve what is fast becoming the problem position at Villa Park.

Money well spent

Two new goalkeepers were brought in by Bruce over the summer, with Andre Moreira arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid and Orjan Nyland, who has started all but one Championship game so far, joined from German side FC Ingolstadt.

Moreira has only played the two Carabao Cup games so far though, and Nyland has been so disappointing that 33-year-old Mark Bunn came in against lowly Preston North End. Unfortunately for him and for Villa fans though, Bunn conceded three in the draw which turned out to be Bruce’s last game in charge.

Although Smith may have to pay a premium for shopping at his former club, Bentley would be worth the money and a safe pair of hands in goal for Villa.

The 25-year-old Englishman was signed by Smith in the summer of 2016 and should look to move again, despite being dropped by his now former boss for the Bees’ last two matches after making two individual errors against Reading.

So, Villa fans, would you support a move for Bentley or can the summer signings still come good? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
