Gaston Pereiro has claimed that his representative is working on a move from PSV Eindhoven to Aston Villa, as reported by Sport890.

The 24-year-old has been a peripheral figure for the Dutch giants this campaign, having made just one Eredivisie start and three substitute appearances.

It is suggested that the Uruguay international is also wanted by FC Cincinnati, but he would rather stay in Europe, meaning that Villa could be in a strong position to sign him.

Some Villa fans aren't sure what to make of the transfer links, which won't change looking at this season, but last campaign's statistics can offer an indication into what they would be getting.

Some fans may not trust these showings because of the league they were made in, but Pereiro's offerings from 2018/19 highlight that he can carry an attacking threat.

A total of 16 goal contributions from 23 starts and four substitute appearances is definitely not bad for an attacking midfielder. It can also be added that despite being given just 102 league minutes this season, Pereiro has scored two goals: the winner against Willem II and another in a 3-1 win against Feyenoord.

Prolificacy such as this can definitely be useful for the Villans as they bid to maintain their Premier League status, but it should be made clear that this move carries risk outside of his sparse game time.

Ahead of the weekend's action, only Norwich City had conceded more Premier League goals than the 43 let in by Villa, and Pereiro would likely do very little to improve that record.

Last season, he averaged just 0.6 tackles, 0.1 interceptions and 0.4 clearances per game - he didn't have any blocks recorded - while committing 0.5 fouls and being dribbled past 0.6 times.

When Villa are discussing whether or not to sign the 24-year-old, they must decide whether he is an exciting asset or a luxury player - if he is the former then he could give the club a boost, but if it's the latter then bringing him in could be a detrimental move.

Meanwhile, Villa could break new ground by making a Premier League first.
