Mbwana Samatta made his Aston Villa debut on Tuesday, as the team went on to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.

Having previously not had any senior strikers available due to Jonathan Kodjia's departure and Wesley's season-ending injury, there will have been plenty of relief about seeing him in the team.

There was also encouragement taken from the performance that the Tanzania international put in, as was evident from the responses after he was taken off for Keinan Davis.

The 27-year-old ran the channels well, in addition to holding the ball up effectively at times during the game, while he defended from the front.

This was shown by the effort he put in to close down the opposition defenders, such as when he blocked a Leicester clearance to help regain possession.

Red Herring or Real Hero: Only hardcore Villa fans will get all of them right....

There was also plenty of discipline in his play, as outlined by the fact that he dropped back when needed to help prevent the Foxes breaking Villa down, making one clearance and one interception.

Samatta had two chances throughout the game, with the first coming from a run to the front post and the second seeing him fail to connect with Jack Grealish's cross.

While it can be argued that he should have done better after getting in the position needed to create the chance, the movement on display is definitely an encouraging sign.

That, as well as his overall play, led one fan to claim he offers "more than Wesley", while another thinks "he'll be slotting those home" after a few games.

Meanwhile, it has been suggested that Villa would only add to their problems with their reported transfer approach.
