When Scott Hogan signed on loan for Birmingham City from Aston Villa, he will have seen it as an opportunity to reignite his career.

To say it has stalled since moving to Villa would be a slight understatement. Everything has gone downhill after his first season where he achieved 19 starts and 19 substitute appearances, scoring six goals and getting two assists.

He didn't make a single start for the Villans in the following season, managing just six substitute appearances, without scoring any goals, which led to a loan spell with Sheffield United.

That only saw him manage five starts and three games off the bench, though he did score twice and register an assist in that time.

His season began with four starts and nine outings from the bench with Stoke City, which will have been massively underwhelming, so he now finds himself with Villa's city rivals Birmingham.

Did he really play for us?! No Villa fan has managed to name all of these obscure Villans....

While the decision to let him go there may appear questionable, the fact that he has been given his debut immediately should give him confidence, which surely vindicates that decision.

That will be helped even more by the fact that he scored the equaliser in a 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest when he flicked Lukas Jutkiewicz's knockdown into the back of the net.

It is clear to see how relieved the Republic of Ireland international was after the game, as he made a post on Twitter about it, which can be seen below.

How Hogan does for the rest of his spell will be vitally important in determining what happens with the rest of his career.
