Shakhtar boss Paulo Fonseca emerges as Aston Villa target

Aston Villa are considering a move for Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca in their hunt to replace Steve Bruce, The Birmingham Mail report.

What’s the word?

After a sequence of just one victory in the last ten games across all competitions, Aston Villa removed Steve Bruce from his post yesterday and are now seeking a replacement to get their hunt for promotion back on track.

A number of options are being considered by Villa’s hierarchy and The Birmingham Mail report that a high-profile candidate is in the club’s sights, with Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca amongst the options for Villa.

Links between Villa and Fonseca have emerged due to his relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes and the club hope to sort their managerial future out swiftly during the upcoming international break, as they want a new boss in place for the clash with Swansea City on October 20th.

A good move?

Linked with an array of top jobs during the past year, Paulo Fonseca is the sort of addition that would unite Villa fans with excitement and provide a huge boost to the club in their attempts to get back into the Premier League.

Shakhtar, playing Champions League football this season, have grown in strength under the guidance of the 45-year-old and he could do a marvellous job at Aston Villa – although he would need backing from the board.

Fonseca would provide Villa with a high-profile manager capable of going toe-to-toe with Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa, and they would be envy of many Premier League clubs if they somehow secure what would be a massive coup.
