According to a report from The Daily Mail, Leicester are monitoring Aston Villa's John McGinn.

However, if they try to pursue him they could face a challenge to secure his services.

The report claims that Villa are in talks to extend his current contract which is due to expire in 2022 whilst West Ham are also said to be monitoring the central midfielder.

The Scottish international was one of the star players in the Championship last season, racking up double figures for goal contributions in his debut season in English football.

Villa's number seven made the switch to the Midlands from Hibernian last summer, initially signing under Steve Bruce for a measly fee in the region of £2.75m plus add-ons.

Since making the move, the midfield general has been nothing short of sensational and was rather unfortunate to miss out on a Team of the Year place over Jack Grealish who made the cut despite playing nine less games than the Scot.

It seems incredibly unlikely that he'd join another club just a year after signing for Villa, but if a move to Leicester did happen this summer, would it be a good addition?

Football FanCast writers have given their verdicts below.

James Beavis

"I think John McGinn would be an inspired Leicester signing, but he is an unrealistic target and there is no chance that they will get him this summer. Having been given his big chance in England by Aston Villa, and then going on to help them win promotion to the Premier League while being named as both the players' player and supporters' player of the year, he will be keen to help the Midlands club make a splash back in the top flight next season.

Because of his quality both in terms of attack and defence – he scored seven goals and assisted nine more in 43 league appearances last term, but also averaged 2.1 tackles and one interception per game – he would no doubt bring something useful to the Foxes’ midfield.

At 24 years of age, his best years should be ahead of him as well. Maybe next summer, then."

Billy Meyers

"John McGinn has been an incredible signing for Aston Villa and he seems to have already achieved cult hero status at Villa Park despite only arriving last summer. The Scotsman ran his socks off for the Villans all season in 2018/19, notching seven goals and nine assists including the winner in the play-off final.

He seems like he would be an excellent addition to the Premier League due to his unbelievable stamina, reliable technical skills and never-say-die mentality. In that respect, you could argue that he would offer Leicester the N'Golo Kante replacement that they have been missing. I think if the Foxes got their hands on him then the King Power Stadium faithful would love him just as much as Villa fans do."

Charles Jones

"John McGinn has proven himself to be a good player with his goals and assists last season, but I don’t think that Leicester City should be going in for him. The Foxes showed towards the back end of last season that they have an outside chance of cracking the top six this term, and I don’t think that McGinn is the player they need to improve their chances of that. They should instead be doing everything they can to sign Youri Tielemans on a permanent deal this summer. Perhaps this should be one they look at again in 12 months time if McGinn has a good campaign in the top-flight with Aston Villa."
