Where were you when you heard the news? The news, that is, that noted failure Roberto Martinez was given one of the jobs in football that most people would consider genuinely exciting. That of the Belgian national team.
Like most people, we did a double-take when the news flashed up. It was a moment of universal humanity, a moment when everyone reacted in the same manner.
Roberto Martinez? Really? Just wow.
But it’s true. And Martinez will be taking the reins of a team that includes Thibaut Courtois, Vincent Kompany, Radja Nainggolan, Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard.
And, of course his former ward at Everton, Romelu Lukaku – who, according to The Sun, could be on his way to Chelsea for a shocking £65m. One of the most explosive, most exciting forwards in the Premier League, and a player who Martinez knows well – and who wouldn’t want to manage Lukaku.
But, like an unrequited love, it doesn’t seem like Lukaku is as keen to work with Martinez as Martinez is to work with him.
It was during Wayne Rooney’s testimonial on Wednesday night that the news broke of Martinez’s appointment, and Lukaku’s reaction to being told the news was – gloriously – caught on camera. And here it is, with no comment needed:
Where were you when you heard the news? Was your reaction the same? Of course it was.
