Tottenham and Chelsea may be tempted to move for Brazilian winger Willian, after Anzhi Makhachkala’s decision to sell their entire team.
In a dramatic turnaround, the Russian club that have been building with a number of expensive signings over the last two years, have decided that they need to focus on a “change in strategy.”
That opens the door to Willian for Andre Villas-Boas, who is a known admirer of the 24-year-old, and Jose Mourinho.
The ex-Shakhtar Donetsk player, who, in any case, had declared that he wanted to leave Anzhi last week, could now be available for far less than the £30million he was bought for in January.
Speaking last week, Willian explained: “I had offers from big English clubs [in January] and from other places, but Shakhtar never accepted them.
“I wanted very badly to go to England, but I have no regrets and couldn’t wait any longer to leave Shakhtar – they used to tell me one thing and then act otherwise.
“Anzhi were the only ones who agreed to play for my release clause. I have enormous affection and respect for this club, but everybody knows that my dreams and desires haven’t changed.”
Despite Anzhi’s poor start to the season, the decision to transfer list their whole squad, including Samuel Eto’o and Lassana Diarra, has shocked the football world.
Manchester United’s former coach, Rene Meulensteen, who was appointed manager of the Russian side just 16 days ago, is also set for the axe.
