Burnley eyeing move for Liverpool favourite as they plan for Prem return

Burnley are eager to take Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan on a season-long loan deal as they make plans ahead of their return to the Premier League, according to reports from The Sun.

The Clarets bounced straight back up to the top tier last term after putting in a convincing showing in the Championship, topping the division after a tense title/promotion race.

So far Sean Dyche’s men have been relatively quiet in the transfer market – Jamie Thomas and Robbie Leitch are their only signings – but it appears that the club are keen to get serious additions in place now pre-season is up and running.

And reports claim that one man they want is Flanagan, with a one-year loan deal being pursued.

The Merseyside-born defender is somewhat a cult hero at his club due to his rugged, no-nonsense playing style, but despite being welcomed back into the first-team and handed a new contract by Jurgen Klopp last term, there are lingering doubts surrounding his fitness after a near 18-month spell out of action with a knee injury.

Affectionately known as the ‘Scouse Cafu’, Flanagan is expected to have a greater role in 2016/17 under his German boss, but Burnley are hopeful that the chance to have him play week in, week out and regain his form will tempt the Reds.

However, the two clubs do have a frosty relationship following Danny Ings’ Bosman move from Turf Moor to Anfield, with the deal having dragged out for the best part of a year after a compensation fee could not be settled without an independent panel.
