Cardiff City smash transfer record again

Gary Medel

Newly promoted Cardiff City have broken their transfer record for the third time this summer in order to purchase midfielder Gary Medel from Sevilla, as reported by Sky Sports.

Medel arrives in South Wales with an £11.2million price tag and bolsters Cardiff’s options with just a week until they kick off their first ever season in the Premier League away at West Ham.

The Bluebirds signed striker Andreas Cornelius for around £8million at the start of the summer which was a new club transfer record but that was broken by the signing of Steven Caulker from Tottenham just last week.

Medel now becomes the third player that Cardiff have spent big on this summer in order to keep themselves in the top flight.

Boss Malky Mackay believes Medel’s experience could be the key factor to the Welsh clubs’ season.

“We’re delighted to have secured the services of Gary – a tenacious and intelligent international midfielder,” Mackay told the club’s official website.

“Having had two seasons of regular football in La Liga – with 60 odd international caps to his name and three appearances at a World Cup – his experience will be an invaluable asset to our squad.

“He’s played in a number of Boca v River Plate derbies in Argentina – one of the world’s biggest derby matches – and I’ve no doubt that his background and pedigree will complement our midfield group in the Barclays Premier League.”
